A new rhythm

I've been in bed for 5 days now and, well, I'm going a little crazy. Tom thinks that it is difficult at the moment because it's such an adjustment from being able to walk around all day and things will get easier as I get used to my days in bed and find some sort of rhythm to my time. Tom also thinks its a fabulous opportunity.. he thinks I am lucky! He keeps telling me to think of all the things I could do if I really put my mind to it.. learn another language, study evolutionary biology, study the history of art, read all the classics, etc. etc. (These are all the things that Tom would like to do I think!)

I think the reason I am finding it hard is because I feel perfectly fine. It feels really strange to be lying in bed all day when you are perfectly healthy.. and boy, do I miss going outside! But.. It will all be worth it in the end. I daydream every day about giving birth to a healthy full-term baby.. It is going to be the best moment of my life!

I have been filling my days reading, watching movies, knitting and playing with Sophie (reading books, doing puzzles).. And quite a bit of sleeping.
It's funny, so many of my friends (especially the ones with two or more kids) said that spending time in bed, while your husband brings you food and drinks sounded like paradise. I agree with them, but I think 2 weeks in bed might be a nice relaxing break, but 6 months? That's going to be a little tricky!

P.s Does anyone know where I can buy knitting, crochet and embroidery supplies online?

In theory bed rest sounds like a lovely break but the reality is that it's a hard slog. You are lucky to be able to spend your bed rest at home with your family and be in your own bed...my bed rest required many weeks in a hospital ward, it was awful!
Sounds like you have some wonderful activities to help you pass the time :)
I purchase yarn online through Bendigo Mills and Ecoyarns, I would assume they have other supplies as well.

Definitely recommend Quince & Co, www.quinceandco.com. Based in the State but they do ship to Aus.

All the best for 'the great lie-in'! Maybe you could do a weekly bed invite? Send out little invites and invite lovely people to join you on the bed for a bed picnic and goss fess. Even if it's Tom and Sophie it could make a weekly event something to look forward to? And a new home made hat for each weekly event is a must!

Good golly Katie, 6 months is a long time, I think I would go crazy too but I think it sounds as though you're on the track to making it more manageable for yourself by filling your hours with enjoyable things. It will all be worth it when you hold your precious baby in your arms later on in the year, and there will be plenty of time for you and Tom and Sophie and your new baby to enjoy the sunshine and outdoors then. How is Sophie adjusting to you being on bed rest?

P.S You are so sweet offering to pass on your unwanted Nigella book to me :)

I am new to your blog and first off, congratulations!!! You look absolutely radiant.

I read your past entry about what people said to you when your baby girl was stillborn. I am so, so sorry for the loss of your Grace. As a mother I know what the love we have for our children is. I read an essay by a woman writer I admire and love very much, and I wondered if you might love something in it too. She uses the exact phrase ' i cannot survive this ' that you mentioned.

I too am new to your blog today. I don't know you of course, but I wanted to wish you and your family all the best for this pregnancy. I will be following now with eager anticipation.

Your writing is just beautiful.

Kind regards,
Cynthia.

Hi, have you checked the yarn you can get via Etsy? There is also loads of recipes and yarn stuff on Ravelry and Purlbee.

I don't envy you your six months in bed - I too would go stir crazy despite there being an endless list of things we could do. But it will be so worthwhile when you birth that dear little baby.

Wool - www.tangledyarns.com.au - Brisbane yarn store with lovely selection - heaps of the lovely yarns from overseas and a wonderful Australian organic range. The WoolBaa in Melbourne is also great (www.woolbaa.com.au) especially for Rowan as is Wondoflex (strange name but great store - www.wondoflex.com.au) - truly awesome range here. For patterns, go to Ravelry - are you a member? You will need to sign up if not - but then the knitting world is your oyster - heaps of patterns for free and many of the rest are downloadable as PDFs. Can while away countless hours on Ravelry. (www.ravelry.com)

Embroidery - The Quilter's and Embroiderer's store in Brisbane (www.tqes.com.au) has one of the best ranges in Australia - the website never feels that easy to get around but the range is incredible and they usually post the same day and will use express envelopes so you get it overnight. They have a huge selection of books, threads, patterns, fabrics and kits.

Hope this is of some help - and I wish you lovely days ahead.

p.s. I found your blog because your name is very similar to my blog's tagline - and here you are in Australia and read by Kimberley - such a small world :-)

I hope you find some inspiration to fill these endless days removed from the real world. Local yarn stores that also have online purchasing include www.josharp.com (love her wool) and www.yarnsgalore.com.au (in Applecross).
Looks like a beautiful view from the skylight. Have you read any of Jonathon Franzten's books? Freedom and The Corrections, both brilliant.

I spent 5 weeks on bedrest in my first pregnancy - the days did get into a rymthm after a while though I was in hospital so the temptation to just get up and do things probably wasn't as strong.

I watched Ted talks, listened to podcasts, read books.

The view from your bed looks beautiful.

I just found your blog... wish these things where around 35 years ago.... please try and stay positive. Hard as it may be. I am so proud of how you can put your feelings into words and best stand behind them. I shall be back to check up on you.

I would go crazy too. You're doing really well and it looks like you've set up your bed area very nicely!
I don;t knit but it sounds like a perfect opportunity for knitting gorgeous bubba things.
I would probably spend my time reading, watching TED and other docos, listening to a lot of radio national and perhaps studying something.
But that yearning for the outdoors, and to get your body moving, must be so strong.
Good luck

I just have to add that you and your little unborn will be in my thoughts throughout 2012, I can't even imagine what you have been through and I know that my 2010 endoscopic pregnancy isn't even close but I do get how you was waiting for 2011 to finish just like I was with 2010.

By the way I'm a knitter too and spend so much time making clothing for my little one - if you want to see I've added it to my ravlery profile imwithleia

take care

Bendigo mills wool is lovely :)
Can you already knit/crochet or are these skills you are going to learn on your bed rest?
Wishing you the best of luck, and hoping you can open a window and feel a lovely WA warm breeze on your face soon xx

As relaxing as 'bed rest' sounds, six months in bed does sound like hard work. It looks like you have set up your area beautifully.

I have bought yarn online from Bendigo woollen mills and other supplies from etsy. I think you can also shop online from Spotlight although I've never tried it.

All the best for the next six months

Hi Katie, I am new to your blog, but see that you are now on bedrest. I was put on bedrest at 21 weeks with my 2nd pregnancy after a cervical cerclage (stitch) also. let me tell you it CAN BE DONE! i delivered him healthy and screaming at 39 weeks.

now, for the bedrest I also had a 2 1/2 year old at the time, and yes, I agree it takes some adjusting for everyone. she is now 10 and can remember laying in bed with me "curled up with a book" and taking naps with me. I think/hope she remembers it fondly. I certainly do.

I cried nightly in fear of my little guy and always so aware of any pangs or pains which would mean impending early delivery ~ so I know its not easy.. IT IS NOT EASY.

enjoy your days, revel in sunshine, kiss your daughter, kiss your husband, let friends help, let friends visit... and I even learned how to knit a scarf!

loving thoughts
joan
