Reading. Or planning to.

books

These are a few of the books I have lined up next to our bed. Some of them I am going to read for the second time because they were just so good. I just finished reading The Slap and I thought it was brilliant.

I am writing a (very long) list of books that I plan to read while I am on bed rest. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.. Remember that I will be spending 6 months in bed.. I need something good to read!

I took out all Tom's books from this photo, which was.. every single book that Christopher Hitchens ever wrote.. the man is obsessed.

Oh what a fun task. Have you read Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell? it's pretty excellent. I am sure I can come up with some more over the next day or two. I'll be back!

You read The Slap! So you didn't feel all ranty about it like I did?

And I love Buddhism for Mothers. My copy has many dog eared pages and highlighted paragraphs :) Hope you enjoy it too.

Looks like a great collection you have there. I love having a little pile of books to work my way through :) Have you read 'Tuesdays With Morrie'? - a good 'life's lessons' type book. My friend has been raving about 'Buddhism for Mothers' - might borrow it off her for a read myself...

My husband is obsessed with Christopher Hitchens too! And that Bill Bryson book is great..

I recommend 'Minus Nine To One' by Jools Oliver (Jamie's wife). Its all about her trying to conceive, then her life as a new mum with one and then two children. It's gorgeous.

Hope you get that bed rest really soon xx

Thanks guys!

Bron - I had always remembered that day at that little park in Randwick when I asked you about the slap. It's funny because so many people i know did not like it, but I thought it was so good!

Jess - I have read that book (years ago when I was pregnant with Sophie) and I thought it was so good too! Although don't you just hate her now.. she is gorgeous, seems really lovely and down to earth, is married to Jamie Oliver .. AND can write!!

The History of Love by Nicole Krauss
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer

(...a few off the top of my head that were page turners for me!.... some of them are quite long, but it sounds like you'll have plenty of time! I haven't commented before but wish you all the very best in your pregnancy endeavours. you are clearly such a beautiful mum to Sophie xxx)

The Omnivore's Dilemma has been on my list for a while now, thanks for reminding me! Every few years I go back and reread all my Anne of Green Gables books - I still love them and find them so uplifting. I think they might be fun to read to Sophie as well! My all time favourite is still One Hundred Years of Solitude. I am reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn at the moment and really enjoying it. It was Lewis' Christmas present (we read Tom Sawyer together last year and he loved it) but proved a bit beyond his years.

Alison - I love Anne of Green Gables too, i want to read the next one.. Anne of Avonlea (I think?)

I really liked The Help by Kathryn Stockton? I think that's who it is by. It's a nice easy read and I read if after The Slap which I found a bit too blokey to be honest. If you're looking for a classic I do love The Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mockingbird. Fingers crossed for you from a snowy englandx

I've started my 'to read list' too. Made up of books I've bought over the years and never read, oops. When I was pregnant, I read Geraldine Brooks' Year of wonders.

A friend of mine has just lent me her favourite book of all time, Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. She's an American, and so is the author, and the novel is set in the mid-west - it's a *western*, ie cowboys and indians, and I *never* thought I'd get into that genre. But I'm 2/3 through it and absolutely adore it. Haven't read a book with such an adventure for a long long time. Don't want it to end.
