James and the giant peach

cover

Tom and I are having such a hard time thinking of boys names. There are about 20 girls names that we both love but we are having a really hard time making a short list of boys names. We both really like quite normal, everyday names.. nothing too trendy or out of the ordinary. In fact, we seem to like the same names as everyone else because the names that we like are always in the top 20 most popular names (e.g Sophie, Grace).

I thought that maybe we could name our kids after characters in Roald Dahl books.. We already have 'Sophie' from the BFG (which was Tom's favourite book when he was little) and so we could have a 'James' from James and the giant peach (which was my favourite book when I was little)..

Then all we will need is a tortoise called Alfie!

N.B Tom didn't find my suggestion very amusing.. back to the drawing board (or baby name books) I go!
Did anyone else have a hard time choosing baby names?

we had a really hard time choosing a boys name! We were still arguing about it while I was in labour!! It seems like there are less choices so the chances of you knowing someone (with negative associations!!) with any given name seem higher. Good luck!

Too funny..would you believe that I have a 3.5year old called James and a 1.5year old called Sophie! We just thought the names together really worked well!

We struggled with boys names too. Think we settled on Toby in the end, but then had a little Lila x

we are also having a terrible time! i'm just a couple weeks away from having our little guy, and although we have a few names on our list, we sometimes look at it and think we need to go back to the drawing board! our first son's name is sebastian, and we love it, so i just keep reminding myself that we figured it out with him, so we can figure it out with this one! best of luck! can't wait to hear what you decide on.

We just had a little guy and it was tough trying to come up with a name. My husband is a teacher so he did not want to choose a name that made him think of a any student! hah! So we went with Huxley. It is different and unique. My husband was reading some of Aldous Huxley's books while I was pregnant and after hearing it a few times I just knew that was it. Also, James and the giant peach was also my favorite book when I was a kid.

We were the opposite of you. Hubby and I had such a hard time trying to find girl names that we both liked. We changed so many times. With girl #2 we came to an agreement when I was in the delivery room! Thankfully #3 was a boy so we had a name picked out months in advance. We also have large families so a lot of good names are already "taken" and I don't like having the same name as someone else in the family.

My husband and I (like most probably) have a shortlist of future children names. All generally classic and somewhat old fashioned, or family names. My husband's brother and his partner are expecting a baby in October and like all of 'our' names though! Oh no. There was some kicking under the table over dinner discussion of baby names haha. Boy names are most definitely hardest though. Good luck, I'm sure you'll come up with the perfect name.

We are totally struggling with boys names! We have 9 weeks to go and have our perfect girls name with backups ready but can't agree or even find anything inspiring for a boy. I like the book theme though... hmmm... actually that probably won't help, he was more Lord of the Rings to my Faraway Tree! Dick and Fanny or Bilbo and Gandolf... nope, back to the drawing board!

In the end, after much debate, we stayed with both our family + cultural traditions. In the end, it's who we are anyway. Although our sons' names are Christian and spelt in the anglicised form, they were inspired by a French connection on my side.

I'm not French (wish) but I can't wait to tell our sons the story behind their names.

I love the boys names Elliot and Oliver- feel free to use either if you like them! Oh, and I can relate to using Roald Dahl as naming inspiration, my little girl Lucy's middle name is Matilda! xx

As you know, with a Sophie and a Grace myself, we have similar taste in baby names :) We found choosing names for boys extremely difficult. Being a teacher, so many names were on my 'black list' :)
